Biographical Info

I’m a retired corporate trainer.  I’ve been interested in transportation my whole life.  I volunteer as a conductor on a tourist train.  I enjoy sailing, aviation, cycling, history, ham radio, camping, astronomy and the grandchildren.   I have a degree in geography and weather technology (thanks to the Air Force).  I’ve been interested in celestial navigation since I was a kid.  It started with the movie Island in the Sky.  While in College I came across the book Positional Astronomy and Astro-Navigation Made Easy by H.R. Mills.  I purchased the book right away and still treasure it.  Later a was able to purchase a non-working Aircraft sextant.  Using the original repair manual I was able to get it working good enough for practice.  Later I purchased a Davis mark 15 which provided better results.  Some other books that have been helpful in learning Celestial Navigation include: The Air Force Manual 51-40 Air Navigation  I have a copy from 1973 and a copy from 1951.  I also have Airborne William Buckley’s book that devotes a chapter to celestial navigation using the Air Almanac and HO-249 (I have volume 3 of HO-249)  The last book the I will mention is the The Lost Art of Finding Our Way by John Edward Huth.  I like this book for many reasons, but Huth makes the point of how GPS can reduce our awareness of the world to a small area and if the GPS fails for any reason we have no idea where we are at.
